Advice for Students Looking for Internships

Here's a body of an email that I sent to an underclassman (today) interested in finding a quality internship.

I am the internship director for the college of business.  I suggest you do a few things in searching for an internship.

1. Read up on how our program works.  We grant credit for internships if a student completes our online internship - concurrent with the internship experience.  you can learn more about that at: http://www.umassd.edu/charlton/internship/  You are not eligible for credit until you have completed 60 credits.

2. I maintain an internship blog that has listings of internship openings.  I get these listings from local businesses and from doing my own searches on the Internet.  I use indeed.com - which you might also want to use to conduct your search.  The blog is at: http://www.businessinternships.blogspot.com/  You should sign up for the daily summaries of internship news and postings. The sign up box is on the right side of the blog.  You can always opt out if you find that the emails are not useful to you.  But if you are serious about finding an internship, the alternative in following the blog is to have to remember to visit each day and that can get lost in our daily grind.

3. Think about meeting with David LePage in the UMD Career Development Center to go over your resume and strategies for finding an internship.

4. You might want to read this report: http://www.businessinternships.blogspot.com/p/how-to-land-excellent-internship.html  It has ideas regarding landing a good internship.

5. You might consider attending next week's (4/2/2012) workshop: http://www.businessinternships.blogspot.com/2012/03/this-workshop-has-been-moved-to-new.html  I will be talking to students about summer internships.

Good luck.
