Paw Sox Internships

I have had a number of students recently ask me about internships with the Paw Sox.  Here is the link to the Paw Sox web site where you can learn more about these opportunities and how to apply:
 http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/team1/page.jsp?ymd=20090120&content_id=497921&vkey=team1_t533&fext=.jsp&sid=t533

Apparently, the Pawtucket Red Sox are now accepting applications for Winter 2011 and Summer 2011.

Also, there is another interesting sports related internship opportunity with the Bay State Games.  Check out my blog entry on this one at: http://businessinternships.blogspot.com/2010/10/bay-state-game-internships.html

Finally, both the Boston Bruins and the Kraft Sports group have brought on UMD students for internships in the past.  Here's the contact information I have with the Kraft Group: Peter Tully, Strategy & Business Development Coordinator - petert@patriots.com
(508) 549-0172 and Rosmary Roca, Strategy & Business Development Manager - rosmaryr@patriots.com
(508) 549-0246

The Bruins usually post their positions and accept resumes through an NHL job site.  The fastest way to see what the Bruins are currently offering for internships is to go to Indeed.com and search on "Internships Bruins" and you should see a list of what positions are currently open.  Both the Kraft Sports Group and the Boston Bruins internships are nonpaid.

Bay State Game Internships

The Bay State Games, an Olympic style sports competition for Massachusetts High School athletes, have announced that they are accepting resumes for spring 2011 internships. I have had some involvement with the games as three of my children have participated in the basketball competitions and my wife has been part of the medical staff. This is a well run tournament and offers some good experience for interns looking to break into the sports field. There is a small stipend involved but the real value is the resume item and the experience. You will also make good contacts. Here's the link to the Bay State web site with more details:

Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Internship Information Session

On this Monday, October 11, at 1:00 pm, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network will be have an information session for students who are interested in interning in the financial services field.  The information session will be held at NMFN's Providence office which I believe is not to far from the Providence Place Mall.  Below is the job description and contact information that was sent to me earlier this week.  FYI, we have had several students successfully complete this internship.  There will be internship opportunities for the spring and summer 2011 semesters.

Job Description: Interns with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network have the same opportunities to build their careers as full-time representatives. Supported by our network of specialists, training programs and mentoring opportunities, interns have access to the resources, products and assistance they need to help their clients and build their practices.

Like Financial Representatives, interns strive to understand their clients' goals and visions in order to uncover financial solutions that put them on a path to success. Financial Representative interns are in business for themselves – but they're not alone to uncover financial solutions that put them on a path to success.

Spring and Fall Interns are required to work 15-20 hours per week.  Summer interns are required to work full time, or 40 hours per week. All schedules are flexible.

A financial representative intern is invited to all the same weekly and monthly training as a full time financial representative.  They are required to come in every week for development training, phoning night and can also schedule individual time with a College Unit Director for help and assistance with case preparation.  Our College Unit Director’s serve as a mentor within the program and will also go on client meetings with interns.  Interns will also have weekly meetings with our team members to assist them with cases that they have in the process, technology training, or additional product knowledge.  Interns will be scheduling appointments with clients for an initial fact finder, or a closing appointment.  They are also encouraged to network with individuals that they know so some may attend networking events, or will schedule prospecting meetings with their centers of influence. Prior to the work that they will be doing in the field, all interns are required to attend and additional training at our regional sales academy which will preface the work they will be doing with clients.

What is in it for YOU the student?

  • Develop business relationship and networking skills.
  • Work for a Fortune 500 company!
  • Real world experience – “test-drive” the position, prior to taking it on as a full time career.
  • Earn credit for school.
  • Get paid – earn weekly development stipends, productivity stipends, bonuses, and commissions!
  • Independence – enjoy a very flexible work schedule.  We work our training schedule around your schools schedule!
  • Obtain your licenses.  We pay for your RI, MA, and CT Insurance Producers License.
  • Hit a certain milestone in our program, and we will sponsor you for your investment registrations!
  • Be a part of an internship that has been ranked as the Top Ten Internship in the country (vault.com) for the last 14 consecutive years!
