Still Time to Do an Internship

The semester is underway and if you have at least junior standing (60 credits earned), you may be able to earn 3 credits for a business elective by completing an internship. The toughest part is landing an acceptable internship. We have a few postings that have come in over the last week or so that I want to make sure everyone knows about. If you are interested in any of these opportunities, follow the link to the internship blog to read more and respond quickly with a resume and cover letter. If you do land an internship within the next week or two, I will be able to enroll you into the internship class (which is required to earn the credits). The internship class is 100% online and quite manageable. If you already have 6 classes, you will need permission of the CCB Associate Dean to add another class. Keep in mind that on this Monday, September 10, 2012 / Woodland Commons / 1pm-4pm, UMD holds its Work n Serve Job Fair. Some students get internship leads from attendance at that event.

Here's some other leads (you may have to copy and paste the links into your browser):

A Westport CPA firm is looking for an intern. This firm, is James Driscoll, CPA is a good small practitioner - always a great way to get introduced to the world of public accounting.

Recruiting firm in North Attleboro is looking for an HR intern for Fall 2012. This might be very interesting for an HR major.

Catholic Social Services is looking for an outreach intern in the New Bedford/Fall River area. This would be a good opportunity for a marketing major.

Senator Michael Rodrigues, a good friend of CCB and an alum of UMD and a fine legislator. He is looking for a Fall 2012 intern in his Beacon Hill. This is unpaid but will provide general administrative experience in a busy office of a State Senator.

Lapointe Insurance in Fall River is looking for an intern to perform a variety of marketing tasks as a Internet and Social Media Marketing Assistant. The company is very well run and the principals are great people. I highly recommend this opportunity.

Gallagher Koster located in Quincy, MA is offering a customer service internship. We have had other UMD interns at this company with positive feedback. This is a paid position.

Southcoast Hospital Group is interested in many types of internships but have specifically requested interns in the area of MIS and Strategic Planning. These are unpaid but offer excellent experience.

There are a few other nonprofit internship postings on the blog that might be of interest to you including Blue Cross/Blue Shield of RI. I suggest you poke around in the August archives of the blog as many of these are still open positions.

Also, if you go down the page of the Internship Blog ( and look for the Blog Archive, you can review other possible open internships. Also, think about subscribing to the blog so you can get daily alerts of new postings. I also offer a free publication entitled: How to Land an Excellent Internship. Hard copies are available at my office (in my door) at CCB-318.

The controller of Stephen & Co. Hair and Beauty in North Dartmouth is looking for an assistant. They are looking for a Freshman/Sophomore who lives local. The position would be about 12 hours per week with Monday morning a must. The position involves light bookkeeping, data entry, graphing, filing, etc. Please send an email of interest and a resume to: Kathy DeBarros at Stephen & Company Hair and Beauty:

Good luck with the start of the semester,

Professor Michael Griffin

Internship Goals

What are you goals regarding internships?  have you written them down? Consider the following:

The average Harvard MBA graduate starts his or first job at $115K with a $20K signing bonus. Nonetheless, some graduates of the Harvard MBA program end up being much more successful than
their fellow graduates in the long run.

In 1979, a survey of graduates from the Harvard Business School found that:

• 84% had no specific goals at all

• 13% had goals but the goals were not committed to paper

• 3% had clear, written goals and plans to accomplish them.

In 1989, the graduates were surveyed again. The results showed:

• The 13% of the class who had goals were earning, on average,

twice as much as the 84% who had no goals at all.

• The 3% who had clear, written goals were earning, on average,

ten times as much as the other 97% combined.

Write down your goals!

Internships are an investment in everyone’s future

By Nicholas Christ

Fall River Herald News

September 1, 2012

In our line of work, the term “investment” is seen and heard on a regular basis. Beyond the monetary reference, though, there is another form of investment which we view as a high priority as well — the investment in people.

One such investment opportunity is through internship programs.

The value of internships cannot be overstated. There is nothing quite so rewarding as giving people a chance, firsthand, to learn about work in a field where they have shown interest. The right internship opportunity takes over, often, where the classroom leaves off and gives students the chance to apply what they have learned in the “real world.” Equally important, it gives individuals the chance to “test drive” the field in which they are interested.

A case in point: Recently, after opening our newest branch in Westport, we had occasion to learn more about the Westport River Watershed Alliance (WRWA). This organization had been on our radar screen for a while and we were familiar with the good work they are doing to advocate for the environment. One of their needs was funding for two interns committed to the field of science and biology, and we were luckily able to come to their aid. These interns are gaining life experiences through their work that will assist in furthering their career choices.

Beyond the benefit to the student or intern, there are tangible benefits to the organization offering the internship. Companies can often learn as much from their interns as their interns learn from them. The students bring enthusiasm and energy to their work, eager to make good impressions and new connections. They may bring innovative ideas and different perspectives that could benefit the company.

In addition to the increased productivity that comes with the growing manpower, the company has an opportunity to train interns as potential employees before they are hired. The interns also have time to get used to the work, other employees and the environment as a whole. They acquire experience that helps ensure they are ready and qualified for future positions.

Over this summer alone, through our own internship program, BayCoast Bank has hosted a total of 23 interns. It was a new experience for 15 young men and women, while 8 others were returning to the bank for another summer. I think it is very important to give college students an opportunity to work in an office environment. The youth of our community need our help and willingness to supplement their learning experience and prepare them for the work force. It is our responsibility as business leaders to mentor the next generation and aid in their success.

Our bank has a limited number of internship positions available and with the local unemployment rate stubbornly still in the double digits I strongly urge other businesses to consider an investment in internships.

The bank begins accepting applications from potential interns in the months of December and January and all of our positions are usually filled by February or March. The students begin work following the completion of final exams in late spring.

As good corporate citizens we should provide the youth of our area with the chance to learn beyond what college or other schooling provides: a chance to see the work environment up close and personal. In my experience it has been a worthwhile investment from which everyone can benefit.
