Auditing Internship: John Hancock

Description
The major objective of the program is to provide talented young people of diverse backgrounds an opportunity to learn about John Hancock and to apply and enhance skills learned in their major course of study. John Hancock provides talented college students of diverse backgrounds an opportunity to be exposed to and learn about the company in an area where they can apply and enhance skills and knowledge through this 12-week summer internship program. This summer, John Hancock will celebrate the program's 21st year. The internship consists of:
Employment and on-the-job training: Past internship placements include: Creative Services, Community Relations, Long Term Care Sales Support, Program Management Office — Life Operations, Long Term Care IT Systems, John Hancock Institutional Operations, Financial Reporting — Mutual Funds, Signator Investors, International Group Programs
Programming: General information about the company, its products and technology and other relevant business topics, opportunities to network with company employees as well as other interns
Mentorship: Each intern will be assigned a mentor who will serve as a coach and will provide advice, counsel and guidance. In turn, each intern will act as a mentor to a Boston high-school student taking part in the company’s Summer of Opportunity program
Specific day-to-day responsibilities include:
1. Completes audit assignments in accordance with department standards.
2. Manages personal assignments within time budgets and target dates, reporting any timing problems or budget over-runs to senior auditor or supervisor.
3. Assists audit staff to communicate/conduct interviews with management regarding the risks managed by the business; and assists in developing audit test programs to evaluate these risks and controls.
4. Assists in preparing audit reports making practical and value-added recommendations to improve internal controls and the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
5. Assists in presenting audit findings and recommendations to business unit management.
6. Follows-up on open audit issues as assigned.
7. Uses technology to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the audit process

Qualifications
· Enrollment in a college or university within 1 to 1.5 years from graduation
· Ability to effectively communicate ideas and recommendations orally and in writing, and to listen and consider ideas of others
· Customer focus and commitment to quality
· Results oriented
· Ability to deal effectively with other audit team members and business unit management

Other desired qualifications:

· Willingness to relocate to Hong Kong or Japan Audit Services upon successful completion of program and job offer.
· Willingness to work beyond summer program.
