CCB Internship News: New Procedure for Posting Internship Positions

After several years of maintaining the Internship Blog, I have decided I can no longer use it to post internship positions for the students of the CCB.  The blog has outgrown its usefulness and it doesn't have the features that other job and internship portals offer.  We (me and the CCB administration) have decided that the UMD Career Development Center's Careerlink system will now be home to all internship postings and jobs.  You (students) interested in applying for internships, should make it a habit to search using the Careerlink (http://www.umassd.edu/career/careerlink/).  The Career Development Staff along with CCB personnel, myself, and some of our faculty, are working to point prospective internship providers and employers to Careerlink so that it is the sole place to find internship opportunities geared to UMD students.  I suggest that if you are looking to land an internship for Fall 2015 that you start soon to check on what's up on Careerlink.  Just this week, I have been asking employers to enter their opportunities into the Careerlink database so students can begin applying.

For at least for the short-term, I will keep this blog up and running but it will be more for informational purposes.  I will use it to post advice and announcements and I may use it to highlight excellent opportunities, as time permits.  However, all students should keep in mind that if you need assistance with career planning, help with your resume, preparing for interviews, and understanding career paths/options, that the excellent staff of the Career Development Center stands ready to help.  Contact information for the CDC can be found at http://www.umassd.edu/career/

I will continue to direct the internship program for Charlton in addition to my duties as a full-time accounting professor however, I will have help.  A faculty member in each department (DIS and Management/Marketing) will soon be appointed to coordinate internships.  I will also coordinate the accounting and finance ones.  To learn more about CCB's internship program and how you can earn credit for an internship, go to our web page at: http://www.umassd.edu/charlton/internship/

We will soon be updating our internship web page for these new arrangements and I am sure you will continue to see announcements from me as the semester approaches and throughout the school year.  I can also share with you developments regarding career development workshops, internship information sessions, and job fairs as those plans become firm.  I am quite aware of the work being done by the new career development staff to plan a calendar of events to serve the students of the university.  I think there will be quite a bit of exciting things during the next academic year to help you connect with interesting career paths.

Stay tuned.

Personal Finance Course Starts July 21. 100% Online, 100% Useful

Ramp Up Your Personal Financial Literacy This Summer
For over 30 years, one of my passions has been personal financial planning.  When I first came out of graduate school – way back in the early 1980s, I was fortunate to land a job as a planner at E.F. Hutton and Company, a Wall Street based investment banking and brokerage firm known for its advertising tagline: “When E.F. Hutton speaks, everybody listens.”  Hutton was also making a name for itself in the field of Personal Financial Planning and I worked in their Providence office providing fee-based planning services to high net worth clients.  That’s where I first learned that one of the secrets of accumulating wealth is an integrated approach.  All areas of personal finance need attention to maximize and preserve wealth including budgeting, borrowing, risk management and insurance, income and estate taxes, investments, and retirement assets.  Although I found investing the most exciting part of the puzzle, I learned that you can’t focus on just that to grow your net worth.  Before you invest in stocks, bonds, real estate, etc. you must have certain foundational things in good order.
In FIN320 Personal Finance, our online course that serves as an introduction to personal financial planning, I take students through the personal financial planning process including how to:

  • Set financial goals
  • Manage a career
  • Manage a budget
  • Use math to calculate present and future values, annuities, and loan payments
  • Mitigate risks
  • Manage credit
  • Buy a home
  • Start investing program
  • Plan for retirements
Although I teach other courses in our accounting and finance curriculum at the Charlton College of Business (UMASS Dartmouth) and enjoy them all, I believe this is the most useful of them all… and one of the most popular that I have taught over my 30 years as a professor.  As a CPA and a practicing professional financial planner, I have seen the mistakes people make with their finances and many people have told me that they wish they had ramped up their financial literacy with a course like this one while still in college.

Stepping Stone
This course also is appealing to people who are interested in entering the financial services filed. Certainly this course could be a first step toward making personal financial planning a profession via jobs such as planer, advisors, stock broker, investment and insurance sales or perhaps achieving certifications and designations in the field such as the CPA, ChFC, CFP, CLU, CFA, and RIA.  If you work at a bank or credit union and want to learn more about financial products or just want to make sure that you do all the right things running a household. This course will not position you to become certified as a financial planner overnight but it could be a stepping stone, as it was for me, into the financial planning world. I took a similar course at Providence College when I was an undergraduate student and it sparked my interest in a field that has exploded and is expected to continue to grow. According to CFP board: “Americans are struggling to pull their finances together and plan for the future. The financial planning profession is growing to address that need, with the career path expected to grow 41% by 2016, according to Money Magazine and Payscale.com.”
Details on the Course
The course will run from Jul 21, 2015-to Aug 19, 2015 and is 100% online.  I utilize our basic Blackboard system which is easy and straightforward to use and a robust learning system called McGraw-Hill’s Connect – which is paired with a very readable personal finance textbook.  Students will work on a case solution that will require they examine various areas of personal financial planning concern for a family.
There are no prerequistes for the course and therefore everyone –business and nonbusiness majors and nondegree seeking students are welcome.  This is a course that might satisfy an elective (3 credits) or it may simply be a valuable self-improvement exercise for anyone who wants to ramp up their financial literacy and open up some options and strategies for financial security. I receive very positive feedback from this course.

More About the Professor
If you would like to read more about my professional background, my biographical sketch can be found via this link: http://www.umassd.edu/charlton/faculty/alphabeticallisting/griffinmichael/ I try to bring my perspective to this course as someone who has not only been a full-time professor at UMASS for 30 years but has continued to consult and advise in the personal financial planning field.

I can also be reached via email at: mgriffin@umassd.edu

Summer courses

Time is running out but if you have a summer internship lined up and want to earn 3 credits for a business elective, you can still get it approved and I can get you into the summer internship course - which starts on June 22nd (Monday).  There is a good chance I can even get you into the course a week or so into it as long as you get in touch with me soon with details of your internship proposal.  I would need to grant approval which you can use as entry into the course through our UMD enrollment center.  The course does carry the normal tuition and fees of a summer course.

FIN320 Personal Finance - will be offered in the 2nd summer session which starts Jul 21, 2015 and runs to Aug 19, 2015.  This course is 100% online via our myCourses (Blackboard and McGraw-Hill Connect systems.)  There are seats that remain.  No prerequisites and a very very useful course.  Anyone interested in a career in personal financial planning or perhaps an internship in that field will find this to be a very appropriate course.  Nonbusiness and business majors are welcome to enroll.  If you would like to see a sample syllabus, feel free to email me at mgriffin@Umassd.edu/  I have taught this course for many years in the traditional face-to-face classroom but now offer it via online.  I have years of experience as a personal financial planner and am a CPA and ChFC - both well aligned to this field.

Finance Internship or Accounting internship - Paid $15 per hour x 40 hours

Professor Griffin's Comments:
This looks like a really good opportunity for either a finance or accounting major. It is listed as a finance internship in Careerlink but it is also a solid accounting internship.  It looks like this one starts this summer and was just posted so if you are interested, apply right away.  They want you to be able to work 40 hours and I assume that is this summer but you may want to inquire about the hours for the Fall.  At $15 an hour that's a summer gross weekly pay of $600!  Not bad!  We have had other interns at PartyLite in Plymouth and have positive feedback.

Personal Finance Course Online July 21 - Aug 19th - 3 credits

Online Personal Finance course (2nd Summer 5 week session) open for enrollment!  The course is FIN 320 and will start on July 21 and run through   August 19th – 3 credits in 5 weeks! The course is an introduction to the financial planning process of setting goals, developing action plans, creating budgets and measuring results. You will become familiar with the techniques of financial analyses necessary to make choices when considering housing, insurance, retirement plans, and borrowing and other personal finance issues.  The course is designed and taught by me (a CPA who has practiced personal financial planning for over 30 years). I took a course like this at Providence College many years ago and it lead me to enter the financial services field and to eventually achieve the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designation and to eventually become a CPA. The course is for three credits and covers a business elective.  There is no prerequisite and nonbusiness majors are also welcome to enroll as well as non-UMASS Dartmouth students.  If you are looking to do an internship in the financial services industry, looking at career paths in insurance, investments, tax planning or comprehensive financial planning then this is a good course for you.  If you are looking to become more financial literate, then this is the course for you. Students have told me for over 30 years that this is one course that has an immediate impact on how they manage their finances and how they will plan going forward.

In the best-selling book, The Millionaire Next Door, the author Thomas J. Stanley states this simple truth:  Whatever your income, always live below your means.”  Such simple advice is not always easy for the financially illiterate to follow.  This course will help you set goals and to budget to reach your goals and live within your means.  Stanley says: “The foundation stone of wealth accumulation is defense, and this defense should be anchored by budgeting and planning.”

Managing your credit, investing wisely, having adequate insurance, understanding banks, and basic income tax planning are all part of this course.  The course will be delivered via myCourses and the McGraw-Hill Connect system and culminates with you pretending to devise a financial plan for a family that needs your help.  I would be happy to send you a sample syllabus.

If you would like more information about this great and very useful course, email me at mgriffin@umassd.edu.  If you want to enroll, please get in touch with our enrollment center at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth or follow this link for more information on how to register: https://webapps.umassd.edu/ue/welcome.php?rn=2440|CE4|3722&term=2440|CE4

The course usually fills up quickly but as of today, it is still open.

Liberty Mutual - Boston - Summer Marketing Internships

Comment from Professor Griffin - sometimes these "marketing internships" may involve cold calling.  I suggest if you apply and get an interview, ask about that aspect of it.  However, if a career in insurance appeals to you, where the money can be very good, this could be a great experience and a foot in the door with a major insurance company.  These descriptions appear to minimize the amount of cold calling so that may be very good news for an intern. The Liberty Mutual posting states that the compensation is $14-$18 per hour.

Search, Search, Search, Summer 2015 and Beyond

One of your strategies when trying to land a great internship is to use the web to search.  Doing that takes unrelenting effort.  Search everyday and generate a list of solid leads.  Send in resumes and cover letters immediately.  Quality should supersede quantity but quantity is important too.  You need to realize that it is a numbers game and you have to get yourself (and your resume) in front of as many decision makers as possible.  Use UMD's Careerlink and I like to use Indeed.com.  What I will do for the rest of the summer is this: I will do searches everyday based on keywords such as internships, intern, Massachusetts, Providence, and Boston.  I'm hoping to identify the remaining employers still looking for summer interns and then my hope will be to find fall internships that are within commuting distance of the UMD campus.

Also keep in mind that within the first two weeks of school in September, we (CCB) and the Career Development Center, will receive local requests for interns.  These requests will come from companies and nonprofits in the Fall River, New Bedford, and Providence areas.  Keep thinking about how you can generate leads for good internships beyond just searching.  If you aren't trying to land one for say - next fall - can you do some things to line yourself up for a Spring 2016 internship?  For accounting majors - the spring semester is a good time to land a tax internship at a CPA firm but late fall is the time to line that up.

In the fall, I will hold internship info workshops and can share more ideas.  Also, if you are a CCB major and want one of our free - laminated quick study Internship guides (a $6.95 value!) that I have authored, send me an email with your UMD SID# and I can reserve one for you.  These are sold nationally but recently we acquired CCB branded ones for the benefit of our eager business students.
