At Ocean Spray we understand the value of working together, while knowing each individual plays a vital role in the company’s success.  Our business has always been and continues to be built on  people from different backgrounds, coming together for a common goal.  The same sense of opportunity, resourcefulness and innovation on which the Cooperative was founded is what drives Ocean Spray today!

Northwestern Mutual - Jobs and Internships

Here is a message I received from a rep. at Northwestern Mutual in Braintree, MA.  Keep in mind that these can be great opportunities if you are the type who likes selling.

My name is Tom Farmer and I am a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual in Braintree. I wanted to reach out to you because our office is looking to add two more advisors within the next six months. I wanted to see if you knew any recent graduates or so-to-be graduates that you think might be good at our job. Typically students that are outgoing and self motivated tend to be the best fits. They do not necessarily need to have a background in finance. We also have a very competitive internship that some students may be interested in. If there is anyone you are thinking of, I would be happy to pass their name and contact info along to our recruiter.

If you have any questions please to not hesitate to reach out to me via email or at the phone number listed below.

Thank you in advance for the help.

    Sincerely,

    Thomas Farmer, MBA, CLU ®

Internship Blog is 8 years old - 1,400 POSTS!

The Business Internship Blog is 8 years old and today we hit 1,400 posts - most of which have been hot leads on internships for students of the Charlton College of Business.  (I keep trying to give up the task of maintaining this blog as it does take some extra work - but students like it!)  Watch the blog for possible summer internships and fall 2014 opportunities too.  You can sign up for email alerts (see the enrollment box on the right hand side.)

However, this blog cannot replace other sources of solid internship leads.  In addition to following the blog (and tell your friends to follow it too!) please utilize UMD's Careerlink, Indeed.com, and build your contacts to land a good internship!!!  Build your network!  Get on LinkedIn and attend events at CCB that help you to meet and mingle.  Talk to family and friends about your desire to build up a solid source of internship leads.  Join student clubs and associations.  Accounting majors - join the Massachusetts Society of CPAs as a student member ($25).  Get yourself out there.  Network, Network, and Network.

    Summer internships for credit

    Hi CCB majors:

If you are interested in earning credit for a summer internship, I suggest you learn about how that works here at the Charlton College of Business.  Here's what happens:

    1.  If you land an internship from the internship blog (http://www.businessinternships.blogspot.com/) and want to earn credit this summer, you will need my approval before you enroll in the summer internship course.  The university charges tuition and fees for the summer internship courses - just like any other summer offering.  It counts as a business elective and is 100% online.

    2. If you land an opportunity on your own and you want to enroll in the summer internship course, the process is the same.  I need to approve it first before you can enroll in the course.

If you are looking for an internship, be sure to follow our internship blog: (http://www.businessinternships.blogspot.com/) and I suggest you sign up for the email alerts on that blog.  Also, be sure to not only look at the recent postings but all the postings for the month of March.  You can see past postings in the archive links on the right hand side.  There are some interesting postings from companies like Textron in Providence, RI, AAA also in Providence, and Aerovox in New Bedford, and there are also some fall 2014 opportunities.

Utilize services like Indeed.com and SimplyHired.com to search for internship postings.  If you are looking to land one in the Boston area, search by specifying a certain mile radius around the city because there are good opportunities in the suburbs too.  If you have a particular company like Fidelity, CVS, Coviden, Hasbro, Nike, Staples, State Street etc.  - that is of interest to you - visit there employment portals (via their company web sites) and apply there.  Many of the larger companies will only accept resumes that way.  But if you know someone at one of the big firms, have them advocate for you inside the company.  That might differentiate you from the hundreds of applications.

Be persistent in your search and in your submission of resumes and cover letters. UMD/CCB students do land impressive internships!  It is happening weekly.

Learn how to use UMD's Careerlink to search for jobs and internships.  Jane Staples, UMD's internship director can help you.  She and others in the Career Development Center (behind UMASS PASS office) in the Campus Center can review your resume and offer tips.

Now is the time to ramp up your search.  Use all possible contacts.  Develop your network, watch the blog, use Indeed.com and Careerlink! Get in touch when you have something you think will qualify.

    Networking and etiquette skills

Here's a message from the DECA student organization:

Dear Charlton College of Business Students,

Here's to hoping your Spring Break was outstanding! Now is the time to take advantage of an opportunity to sharpen up your networking and etiquette skills, FOR FREE

Please join Collegiate DECA, Net Impact, and the Career Development Center on Tuesday April 1st at 5pm in Woodland Commons for an exclusive etiquette dinner

Please spread the word to friends and register to DECA@umassd.edu by Thursday March 27th!

COMMENT:  Take this seriously.  We all need to polish up our "brand".  We all need transformation into the professional world and this is a very useful event.  The first job interview I went on (many many years ago - Lincoln was still president!) involved having dinner with two vice presidents of a bank.  I had to eat and interview and socialize.  Not easy - don't order the messy meal!  Know how to dress and act in professional settings!  This is a great prereq. for anyone looking to intern!!!  Accounting majors - get to this event!  (All majors should attend but as an accounting professor - I want the accounting majors to get there!)

    Professor Griffin

PS: You can't beat the price.  It is free!
