FDIC Bank Examiners Position (Full-time)

Many years ago, I was a federal bank examiner and I can tell you that these positions are an excellent way to break into the field of banking. I also know of a UMD grad who has been with the FDIC for over 20 years and has had a terrific career. The FDIC is looking for all types of business majors and the training is outstanding. Job Title: Trainee (Financial Institution Specialist) – Three-year training program leading to professional certification as a commissioned bank examiner. Locations: 100 positions to be filled at multiple locations throughout the U.S. Compensation: Selectees will initially be appointed as student interns until they successfully complete 320 to 640 hours of prescribed work experience. Upon completion of that requirement, they will be non-competitively converted to a permanent, career appointment at a starting salary of $50,537-$67,265 per annum, depending on location, plus an excellent vacation and benefits package.

Duties: Financial Institution Specialists receive formal classroom and on-the-job training to become bank examiners with the FDIC. During the first year of the program, they perform rotational assignments to become familiar with each of the Corporation’s major business functions. They are trained to assess financial institutions to determine whether they are following safe and sound banking practices, maintaining effective internal controls and procedures, managing their institutions effectively, and complying with all applicable laws and regulations, including those relating to consumer protection, privacy, community reinvestment, and fair lending. They also participate in activities related to the closing and sale of failing financial institutions and the management of the ensuing receivership, including the management and disposition of failed bank assets. Bank examiners typically work in teams and often must travel extensively to conduct on-site exams at banks. Trainees will be certified as commissioned bank examiners upon successful completion of this training program. The FDIC seeks applicants with strong analytical and quantitative skills, the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, the ability to work both independently and in teams, knowledge of the basic principles of accounting and finance; and an interest in public service.
