WHALE is a membership-based, nonprofit, charitable historic preservation organization dedicated to promoting the value and reuse of historic structures throughout Greater New Bedford through preservation, education and advocacy. WHALE currently has 1,000 members, both individual and corporate.
WHALE is located at 13 Hamilton Street, New Bedford in the heart of New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. Our web address is http://www.waterfrontleague.org/. We are currently putting the finishing touches on our new, redesigned website.
We serve the greater New Bedford area from Wareham to Westport but much of our work is concentrated on New Bedford, with its rich history and architecture.
Overview of the internship/coop objectives: To gain assistance from an enthusiastic, self-starter with our marketing, public relations and web activities to better promote to and gain support of our activities from our members and potential members.
Primary duties and responsibilities: Marketing/ PR
Develop and distribute press releases, develop and foster relationships with various media outlets and reporters/editors and other key staff, Coordinate Press conferences, work with Graphic artist to develop invitations, promotional material for events and programs, maintain website and upload new information. Develop PR material for members. Coordinate quarterly newsletter including writing articles, obtaining images, and getting articles from other appropriate staff members. Help grow membership.
What will the student learn from this experience?
The student will learn about several aspects of marketing and public relations for nonprofit organizations. The student will develop very marketable skills that will be transferable and helpful to them no matter what employment they choose in the future. The student, when completed, will be able to successfully write a press release that grabs the attention of the reader, write an interesting article for a newsletter, know how to foster media, and understand that marketing and PR are key to acquiring and maintaining members. They will also learn about web sites and how to achieve the maximum benefit of the web and email.

Compensation: Unpaid
Academic preparation of the student required (graduate, senior, junior, courses taken, GPA, etc.): Marketing major or classes preferred. Junior or above. No background or experience in historic preservation is necessary.
Skills required: Computer literate in Word, Excel. Knowledgeable about the internet.
Hours of work: 9-10
