Student membership in Institute of Management Accountants and involvement in the CCB AA

Hi CCB Accounting Majors:

With the start of the fall semester upon us, I though I could share with you an email that I recently received from the Institute of Management Accountants. You might find this offer relevant to your accounting career plans. The IMA is the professional organization for accounting and finance professionals that practice management accounting. As many of you learned in ACT212 or will soon be learning, Management Accounting is a very large branch of accounting. Controllers, internal auditors, financial analysts, staff accountants, bank examiners, accounting managers and many other professionals work in management accounting.

Most of my practice based work experience has been in the area of management accounting and I am a member of the IMA. I am also a Certified Management Accountant and a Certified Financial Manager, both designations granted by the IMA.

The offer detailed in the email below is a 1 year membership in the IMA. I just renewed my membership and it cost me $128 for one year (and that's 1/2 price for faculty). Years ago our accounting association (club) would offer this type of deal to all its members. Now, any accounting major in CCB can join the IMA. This is a good resume item so I suggest you consider it.

In any event, whether you join the IMA or not, consider joining the CCB Accounting Association. I am sure there will be an email from the officers of that organization soon inviting all to join. The Accounting Association is a student-run organization, which sponsors a wide range
of accounting-oriented programs, lectures and workshops in order to assist students in bridging the gap between the theory of the classroom and the reality of accounting practice. The Association is also a student affiliate group of The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and conducts many joint activities with the Southern Massachusetts Chapter of the IMA. In addition, the AA invites speakers from the practice of accounting and hosts career forums. These events will help
you learn about accounting as a career, internships, and job opportunities. Joining the AA and the IMA will increase your networking opportunities - a critical strategy today for college accounting majors.

Summer 2010 Experience

James Nutter, a UMD econ major says the following about his summer internship with Digitas:

am doing an internship with Digitas in Boston this summer. I'm an economics major however the internship is in client finance. This an extremely interesting company on the forefront of digital advertising, and they are making breakthroughs in this field almost daily. I report directly to a client finance analyst and client finance manager as well as working with the rest of the team including the VP/Director Of Finance.

Digitas is a subsidiary of Publicis Groupe which is one of the three largest global advertising holding companies. Publicis Groupe has over 45,000 employees located in 104 countries and the global headquarters in Paris. Digitas itself has over 3,000 employees and is in 19 different countries and I worked in the headquarters located in Boston. I was privileged to not only work with Digitas and their clients but some of their sister agencies as well.

My specific job included but was not limited to the following:

* Providing accounting, analysis, budget, and reporting support to the organization and being directly responsible for helping operational managers analyze the business and initiate changes through the strategic use of information. (in layman terms I worked with the budgets of a variety of clients that Digitas works with.)

During this internship I gained a lot of knowledge specific to the everyday in and outs of the finance world. In doing my job I gained this specific training:

* Developed hands on experience at a margin based interactive marketing agency.
* Provided Digitas project managers with ad hoc reports that show actual hour and billable monthly amounts.
* Provided upper level management with travel expense analysis
* Invoice numerousness clients based on different terms, following up with the clients to improve cash flow avoiding aging complications.
* Developed a strong understanding of accounting concepts like debits/credits, as well as pass through and non pass through expenses.
* Opened and organized job codes for billable and non-billable purposes.
* Developed strong negotiation and interpersonal communication skills through constant interaction with upper level co-workers.
* Sarbanes compliant, able to provide on-the-spot backup documentation during audits.
* Developed proficient skills in excell, (V-lookups, Pivot tables, Etc), Lawson (accounting software), and Business Objectives (reporting software)

My everyday duties were not the only thing this internship consisted of. Every week the intern class received training from a variety of different capabilities which included; Creative, Media, Account Planning, Marketing, Strategy and Analysis, Delivery/Traffic, Marketing Operations, and New Business. All of these were extremly interesting and exposed me to a the digital advertising work as a hole not just the behind the scenes finance work that I did.

If this was not enough I also went to a variety of shared learning sessions which was the way teams showed their work off to a variety of clients and the company brought in some guest speakers. Some of these included talks on Iphone apps made by Digitas, CGI work, as well as a lecture by Steve Forbes.

On top of all of this I took part in an internship case study. Our class was split into three teams with counterparts in both Atlanta and Detroit whom we had to work with over the phone. We were to develop a pitch to win over a potential client using both creative and analytical components to our presentation. I am happy to say that I was on the winning team of this case study and it was quite the experience that I don't think i would have received anywhere else.

This was an amazing summer experience and I have nothing but good things to say about this company. They offer internships in every capability that I listed above so I recommend to anyone applying for internships to try Digitas as you will not only gain knowledge in your field but in the entire ad agency world.

Free iBooks

Within the next two weeks, I will be blogging and tweeting (and emailing) about a very interesting promotion that a major publisher will be offering. A multitude of valuable est prep guides, study aids, and related titles that would normally cost hundreds of dollars will be free on the iBookstore. Students can enjoy these titles on their iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch device with the iBooks app. There will be some business related books and many nonbusiness related ones. If you have friends who have Apple mobile devices, let them know about this.

One of my books from the business world will be available but many other titles that might be of intereste to literally millions of college and professional people. So watch my blog, email and tweets about this interesting development. These are legitimate and very useful books from a well known and respected publisher. The publisher is teaming with Apple in hopes that these free books might trigger some reading habits on mobile devices and lead to future sales of both the digital and paper versions of the publishers text. My particular book is one of the top selling iBooks from this publisher and so I am taking a chance of cannibalizing my sales during this one week promotion. But I don;t think I can lose especially if it gets my book and my name out to thousands of business students.

I am hoping that readers of my blogs and tweets will help this go viral. Please let your friends and colleagues know about this opportunity.

Northwestern Mutual Life Internships

Below is an email that I received from Northwestern Mutual's recruiter from the Providence, RI office. Her contact information is in the body of the blog entry (below). She (Mia) is also the contact person for internships and she is looking to hire UMD students for Fall 2010 internships.

EMAIL:
Northwestern Mutual’s Southern New England group office is now hiring December graduates to provide them with some great real world experience prior to them embarking on a full time career come the New Year.

Being a part of one of the “Top Ten Internships” in the country for the last consecutive fourteen years is a great avenue for an upcoming graduate to take – we will teach them entrepreneurial skills, business and social networking skills and much, much more!

A few other perks of our program:

~ All students are licensed insurance producers. Northwestern pays for their Life, Accident, and Health license for them.

~ If our students hit a certain milestone within the program, we will sponsor and pay for their investment registrations.

~ Flexible work schedule – we work around a student’s school schedule.

~ Paid internship! We provide a training and productivity stipend so interns can earn $2,000 in stipends per trimester AND commissions!

~ Assists in the career selection process. Nationally 1 in 3 our interns are offered a full time position upon graduation.

Please take a few minutes to identify some December graduates that I should be connecting with, and please let me know who comes to mind!

In the meantime, check out this short “Day in the Life” video link which will give you, and any interested students more information regarding the opportunity.

Northwestern Mutual Financial Representative Intern Job Description

Job Description: Interns with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network have the same opportunities to build their careers as full-time representatives. Supported by our network of specialists, training programs and mentoring opportunities, interns have access to the resources, products and assistance they need to help their clients and build their practices.

Like Financial Representatives, interns strive to understand their clients' goals and visions in order to uncover financial solutions that put them on a path to success. Financial Representative interns are in business for themselves – but they're not alone to uncover financial solutions that put them on a path to success.
Spring and Fall Interns are required to work 15-20 hours per week. Summer interns are required to work full time, or 40 hours per week. All schedules are flexible.
A financial representative intern is invited to all the same weekly and monthly training as a full time financial representative. They are required to come in every week for development training, phoning night and can also schedule individual time with a College Unit Director for help and assistance with case preparation. Our College Unit Director’s serve as a mentor within the program and will also go on client meetings with interns. Interns will also have weekly meetings with our team members to assist them with cases that they have in the process, technology training, or additional product knowledge. Interns will be scheduling appointments with clients for an initial fact finder, or a closing appointment. They are also encouraged to network with individuals that they know so some may attend networking events, or will schedule prospecting meetings with their centers of influence. Prior to the work that they will be doing in the field, all interns are required to attend and additional training at our regional sales academy which will preface the work they will be doing with clients.
