The New Bedford Museum of Glass (www.nbmog.org) is located in a spacious old factory building shared with the New Bedford Antiques Center, which is a three-minute drive from downtown New Bedford . The museum's growing collection includes art glass made in New Bedford by the famous Mt. Washington and Pairpoint factories, glass from the Midwest and other regions of the country, English and Continental glass, ancient glass, historical glass, Tiffany and Steuben, paperweights, studio glass and much more. The library has more than 8000 catalogued items, and is the largest public library of its kind in New England.

Primary duties and responsibilities:

Help determine and collaborate on a multi-faceted marketing campaign. Provide coverage in the Museum's gift shop/admission area. Design and implement ideas to improve the museum visitor’s experience. Contribute to the formation of the Museum's short-and long-term strategies for fiscal success.

1. functions of and issues facing a small, not-for-profit organization

2. devise and implement, with supervision, a variety of marketing strategies via modern and traditional avenues to increase the museum’s public exposure

3. history and importance of glass production in New Bedford; history of glassmaking around the world and through the centuries

4. hone marketing and writing skills by creating and distributing press releases, flyers, signage, etc; develop improvements to enhance visitors‘ experiences at the museum

5. staffing a gift shop/admission area, including activities such as: displaying and selling glass and related materials; interacting with public; handling sales transactions - making change, verifying checks, accounting for sales, donations, and consignments in appropriate logs; and identify and help implement more effective inventory, security, and accounting systems.

Skills required:

Interests in some of the following: marketing/not-for-profit/visual arts/history/writing. A willingness to do a variety of tasks as needed. Creative computer skills. An organized, self-motivated intern with initiative who wants to share and create ideas. Knowledge of the people and businesses in the greater New Bedford area a plus.

Hours of work:

Very flexible. The museum is open seven days, but there are projects to be done outside of its open times, and all the work does not necessarily have to be done on-site.

Start and end dates:

Start ASAP and end at the conclusion of the semester/135 hours. Possibility of ongoing involvement.
