Academic Coach Positions (PAID)

PACE/YouthBuild New Bedford is seeking six Academic Coaches, to conduct the Academic Component of the YouthBuild Program. Applicants should be skilled in math, English/writing, and science. One position will additionally call for a background in counseling. These positions are funded by the AmeriCorps Half-time Program and follow the qualifications, terms of service and educational award guidelines.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Academic Coach

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Academic Coaches provide classroom management and lead the students to proficiency in all aspects of the rigorous Inquiry Based, Independent Learning model of instruction.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Academic Coaches are led by the Academic Specialist.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
• Work closely with Academic Specialist to facilitate high quality learning and student engagement
• Participate in the development of the student’s Individual Education Plan
• Orient students to the classroom environment and rigorous expectations of program
• Lead students in Inquiry Based, Independent Learning activities.
• Teach reading, writing, math and science skills
• Assist students in completing assignments to prepare for the GED test.
• Work with students on a one-to-one basis or in small groups
• Provide individual and group tutoring
• Use Instructional Technology to support teaching and learning
• Develop systems to monitor student progress
• Maintain student portfolios and complete anecdotal records of student progress
• Attend weekly student needs meetings with staff.
• Liaison with local, agencies to maximize opportunities for students
• In coordination with project staff, assist in staff development programs and student activities
• Connect students to appropriate community services.
• Encourage students to attend and participate in community service activities

QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference will be given to applicants with: the desire and passion to work with young learners age 16- 24 who have left school, have earned at least an Associate Degree or are progressing toward a degree in a related field, experience with academic tutoring/teaching with diverse populations, understanding of youth development theories, and experience in addressing learning challenges of students formerly from traditional classrooms.

Additional qualifications include: demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of academic support systems, familiarity with GED curriculum and basic skill instruction, understanding and skill with mentoring diverse students, experience working in a collaborative educational environment, strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. Strong background and experience selecting and using technology as a tracking and research tool. YouthBuild is actively seeking bilingual candidates for these positions.

POSITION STATUS: This is a 45 week, position

SALARY: $10.00/hr – 25 hrs per week, for 45 weeks
