by Clayton M. Christensen, James Allworth, and Karen Dillon. Dr. Christensen is a Havard professor of business who has written a great deal on the subject of innovation. I like this book because it can help young professionals, interns, newly graduated business majors, etc. form a plan for a successful career and life. Very well written. If you are interested in buying the book from Amazon, here is the link: http://astore.amazon.com/interblog-20.

CCB Internship Program and How to Find an Internship
Hi CCB students:
Here's a link to a recent video/PPT presentation on our internship program and how to find an internship. Also keep in mind that I have a free guide that CCB students can pick up at my office that might give you additional ideas about how to land an excellent internship. My office is at CCB-318.

There is still time to enroll in our internship course. However, you need my approval and you must have a quality internship. Please visit our web page at: http://www.umassd.edu/charlton/internship/ for more details.
Also, for non-CCB students (I get lost of inquires from other colleges - even business majors from other universities!), I have two internship related books available from Lulu.com:

Attention: Students Looking at Fall 2012 Internships
Hello CCB Majors:
The start of the Fall 2012 semester is almost upon us. For those of you who are interested in doing a Fall 2012 internship, there is still time, however you must act quickly. Students with at least 60 credits earned and a 2.5 GPA can earn credit from an internship experience by having the internship approved by me and completing the semester long CCB internship class. That class is delivered through myCourses. To read more about the CCB internship program, visit: http://www.umassd.edu/charlton/internship/
Of course, the first step in doing an internship for credit is to land an approved internship. The CCB Internship Blog (http://www.businessinternships.blogspot.com/) carries posts of open internships and interested students should follow that blog by bookmarking it in your browser and visiting it often or by signing up for its email alerts. Recent entries (and still open positions) to the blog include the following:
Marketing and Sales Internship at Emerald Health Patient Care Simplified
Sales and Marketing Intern at a local manufacturer
Paid PR Internship in Johnston, RI
Internal Audit Internship at Hasbro (Hasbro also is advertising IT internships)
Alex & Anni Internships, Cranston RI
Rockport Brand Marketing & PR Intern (Canton, MA)
Please note that the the Southcoast Hospital Group continues to take applications from prospective interns and will attempt to match your background with the business side of running a larhe health care company. Students can apply directly online: http://www.southcoast.org/jobs/interns-application.html
Or you can send your resume as an attachment to an email. If you choose that route - send it to Tania Picard at: PicardT@southcoast.org . Southcoast is the largest employer in the region and although these internships are initially unpaid, they could lead to paid opportunities or full-time jobs with Southcoast down the road.
I will continue to post opportunities as they come in during the next couple of weeks. Students interested in completing an internship during the Fall semester should keep checking the internship blog. In addition, students are encouraged to submit internship proposals for approval to me at: mgriffin@umassd.edu
I have also printed up some copies of a booklet that I wrote called: How to Land an Excellent Internship. Copies are available at my office - CCB318. There is a supply in the box on my door. Please take one if you are interested. It may give you a few ideas. You must use a diversified approach to finding a great internship. I also encourage all CCB majors to visit David LePage (dlepage1@umassd.edu) at the UMD Career Development Center to have your resume critiqued and to get tips on how to search for internships and the steps you need to be taking to position yourself for a successful job search. Talk to faculty, family and friend about your desire to do an internship. Master the art of searching the Internet for opportunities. The Career Development Center can help with that also.
I suggest that all students SUBSCRIBE TO AN EMAIL ALERT SERVICE that can tell you when an internship posting has been made on the web. I subscribe to one through a website called Indeed.com (www.indeed.com) and it has been quite fruitful. Another service that we have had good luck with is Simply Hired (www.simplyhired.com). These services send me an email once a day based on the keywords that I enter. For example, I receive an email alert for any web job posting that includes the words: “Internships in Massachusetts.” As a result, I have been able to alert our business students to internship openings with companies such as State Street Bank, Proctor and Gamble, the New England Patriots, Nike, Reebok, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, just to name a few. Students who respond quickly to these email alerts have had good luck landing internships.
Learn how to do advance searching with these sites. For example, with Simply Hired you can incorporate filters such as:
• Keywords found anywhere in a job posting
• Keywords found in job titles
• Locations based on a certain number of miles (radius) from a particular city (5, 10, 15, 25, 50, and 100 miles)
• Freshness of the posting such as postings since your last visit to the site, last 24 hours, last 7 days, last 30 days etc.
• Company size (based on number of employees and/or revenues)
Finally, although school begins on September 5, 2012 and the add/drop period ends on September 11, 2012, I can get waivers to add students into the internship course probably as late as September 25th. Therefore, you still have about a month to land an internship-for-credit for Fall 2012. They count as a business elective. Please become familiar with the rules and regulations of our program by visiting: http://www.umassd.edu/charlton/internship/

Advice from a recruiter to prospective interns
Recently, a recruiter for a CPA firm gave me some great advice regarding the preparation that students should perform prior to an interview. I think that although this advice is from a CPA firm, it is really applicable to just about any major out there looking for a job.
(Mike Griffin) Queston: What as a recruiter do you like to see on resumes of propsoective interns. I am telling freshman to start doing things from day 1 that can beef up that resume including part-time jobs (even waiting on tables, landscaping etc. because it shows you can work), student clubs (Accounting Association), internships (multiple ones if possible), what else would you like to see?
(Experienced Recruiter) Answer: From my standpoint, I think you have hit all of the right points. I like to see what they are doing outside of the classroom, whether on campus activities or part time jobs; volunteer work looks good; with their part time jobs, if they can demonstrate team player skills as well as leadership roles (i.e. shift supervisor, etc.) or individual leadership skills which can be evidenced in sports, work or civic activities as an opportunity to discuss their ability handle situations and decision making that also looks good. Also, I like to see their overall GPA as well as a very strong GPA in accounting. Additional plusses include travel, a foreign language or other experiences that speak to their worldliness.
Beyond that, it comes down to how well they present themselves in person. We’ve had people come in who were not dressed for success, or did not otherwise articulate very well during the discussion with the interviewer. The later can be chalked up to nerves, but there is little excuse for not dressing properly for an interview. They need to think of how one should dress or practice interviewing skills. The resume may help get them in the door; interview closes the deal.
Finally, I like to see a candidate do real research on our firm. Not just check the website and tell me with have 4 offices and 160 employees. But read and be able to ask questions during the interview.

Sales and Marketing Intern (New Bedford), Fall 2012
Davico Mfg. is looking to hire an intern for the Fall 2012 semester. Their sales and marketing department could use a person to assist in several areas that would give an intern exposure and experience with a world class customer service department in a busy office environment. This person should have good computer and communication skills as they will be interacting with both our customers and the office team. Some of the specific opportunities that they will have is:
· Contacting customers from our customer list and updating contact and other pertinent data. They would be working from a script and then entering this updated data into our computer system. Great phone skills and personal interaction skills are obviously important here.
· Assisting our marketing department by accumulating part size and dimensional data and entering this into our computer system. We currently manufacture approximately 1,500 part numbers and much of this data needs to be updated.
· Assisting our marketing department by taking or updating older digital images of our parts.
· Assisting our marketing department helping with the creation of newsletters, graphics and other marketing materials. Some graphic design or marketing materials creation experience would be helpful here.
· Assisting our business office with some basic clerical duties from filing to data entry.
The intern would have exposure to a multitude of things in both sales and marketing of a busy manufacturer.
Please send your resume and cover letter to Mr. Glenn Hamblett. I believe Mr. Hamblett would rather receive the resume and cover letter via U.S. Mail.. See the address below. This is a paid position (10-12 hours per week.)
