Summer Internships for Credit

CCB Majors:

Have you thought about a summer internship as a way to earn credit and perhaps lighten your load down the road?

You can earn 3 credits as a business elective if you complete an approved summer internship and the requirements of the internship course. You must have at least a 2.5 GPA and 60 earned credits. If you are completing your sophomore year (and have earned 60 credits), an
internship is a good way to satisfy a business elective (3 credits) while gaining real world experience - something you'll need for your resume.

Here is the process:

1. Have your internship approved by me. I'll need some basic data such
as name of company, description of internship, what you will learn (5 or
6 learning objectives), hours you will work, name of supervisor and
contact info, etc.
2. Use my approval email to sign up for the internship course (based on
your internship it will be either ACT399, FIN399, MGT399, MIS399,
MKT399, POM399).
3. Complete the 100% online course through myCourses.
4. Receive a letter grade and 3 credits.

The online course will be available in the first summer session which starts June 1. You still have plenty of time to hunt down an internship. Watch for my emails, check out my blog
http://www.businessinternships.blogspot.com/, visit with David LePage in the Career Resource Center and get his advice on how to find an internship, set up job alerts with web services like Indeed.com with keywords: internship and the region i.e., Boston, MA , and use your network of family and friends to find good summer opportunities. Don't hesitate to visit a company and propose the idea. Send a letter and resume to anyone you think might make a good mentor in an internship situation.

The internship must meet CCB's policies and be a true learning experience in a professional environment guided by qualified mentors/supervisors. Many of our area nonprofits - such as hospitals, museums, foundations etc. would certainly consider interns however, those internship are usually unpaid. You must complete at least 135 hours while satisfying the requirements of the online course. The course requires brief written assignments, review of articles and videos
on work-related topics, and a 10 page term paper. Most students find the course very manageable - no more than 15 hours of your time.

Email me your internship related questions. Good luck.
