With just a few weeks left till school starts, I
thought it would be a good time to give you some
information on internships. As many of you know,
internships are not required of CCB majors but at
least one internship during your undergraduate
years would be a wise move. If you are
interested in doing an internship for credit,
keep in mind that you must be meet the following criteria:
Have at least junior standing (60 credits).
Have a minimum GPA of 2.5.
Be a Charlton College of Business student.
Be hired by an approved internship employer.
Enroll in the Internship course.
Complete all paperwork by the end of the Add/Drop period.
The biggest task for the fall 2008 internship
program is finding an acceptable
employer. Internship providers do contact me and
I blast out emails (as many of you know). I also
post the internship openings to my blog:
You should also check out the UMD eRecruiting
site because some internships are also posted
there. I anticipate receiving more notices from
employers in the next few weeks but you should
also begin a search of your own. I use
Indeed.com as a way to learn about internships in
Massachusetts and Rhode Island. If you visit
Indeed.com you can do keyword searches on
internships that interest you. When you find one
that meets your criteria, you can designate that
Indeed.com send you email alerts. I get them
once a day and sometimes there are some very interesting ones.
You might also find it fruitful to poke around
the blog
(<http://www.businessinternships.blogspot.com/>www.businessinternships.blogspot.com/)
and go back in time. If you see something there
that is of interest, contact the employer with an
email to find out if they are looking for interns for the fall.
For students in the Fall River/New Bedford areas,
the Southcoast Hospital Group (including St.
Luke's and Charlton Memorial Hospital) is always
looking for interns (unpaid). Contact Elaine
Wilcox at Southcoast
<mailto:wilcoxe@southcoast.org>wilcoxe@southcoast.org
508-679-3131 x 2989. They are interested in all
types of internships but you will need to propose something to Ms. Wilcox.
MIS Majors – there are a couple of interesting
internships with Hasbro (paid) and one with
Southcoast Hospitals (unpaid) and AHEAD
Sportswear (Gold) (paid). They are on the blog.
If you come upon a company that wants to hire you
as an intern you will need my approval before you
can enroll in one of the internship sections
(plenty of room remaining). I will need some questions answered:
Company name and web site?
Overview of the internship?
Primary duties and responsibilities?
What will the student learn from this experience?
Job Title?
Compensation?
Start and end dates?
Primary supervisor?
You must find a professional experience. It
can't be making photocopies or delivering
pizza. Check out the information on the CCB
internship web site:
and in particular, read about the employers
responsibilities and share that information with your supervisor.
The internship course is the way you earn
credits. It is 100% online and you need my
approval to enroll. The course must be completed
concurrent with the course. There is no way
around this. We don't give credit for past experience.
Perhaps you have seen the Seinfeld episode
entitled: "The Voice". Kramer gets an intern
from New York University (NYU) who is supposed to
be working for "Kramerica Industries", but he
really ends up "mending chicken wire", having
"high tea with a Mr. Newman" and setting up lunch
appointments with Jerry at the coffee shop. The
intern's Dean eventually ends the internship. We
also can't have internships with Kramerica
Industries or internships that do not involve
professional work in a professional setting. I
have a duty to make sure there is some rigor and
professional responsibilities, not to mention
real learning geared to important objectives. And
please – no internships with parents or family
members. That is strictly against college policy.
Finally, I can work together to get your
internship in place and enroll you into the
internship course. However, I will be away and
won't have much access to email from August 8
till August 21. I will be back on campus August
22 and will be available through the add/drop
period (ends September 8). So we have time. But
I do encourage you to get moving and looking for
solid internship opportunities. Also, we will
have the online class available in Spring 2009
and Summer 2009. And during 2008 and 2009, there
will be general information sessions on
internships, some sessions on our very exciting
Washington Center Internships and on our new
international internships (India) for MIS and Marketing Majors.
Enjoy the remaining weeks of your vacation.
