Internship

Volunteer Internship

The Massachusetts Export Center is looking for volunteer interns to work a minimum of 16 hours per week

Dear Prospective Intern,

The Massachusetts Export Center is a government agency that helps Massachusetts businesses to export their products and services internationally. We operate through a statewide network of offices and employ a small team of international trade professionals. Though we are small in number, we are extremely effective in providing a variety of export related services to companies throughout the Commonwealth.

Because of our small staff, much of what we do is made possible through the efforts of our interns. Moreover, because we are a small office, our interns have the ability to work on a variety of projects to which they
would not necessarily have exposure in a larger organization. The responsibilities of an intern may include a variety of tasks, ranging from data entry to work on high-level client research. Each project is geared to
special capabilities that the intern may have, such as foreign language skills or computer skills. When possible, we provide interns with the opportunity to work on real-world cases, helping clients to develop new
markets overseas.

If you have initiative, are flexible, have an interest in international business and consider yourself a team player, please forward your resume and cover letter to us. Please specify the office location where you would
like to work (Boston, Holyoke or Worcester).

We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
The Massachusetts Export Center Team

Job Description: The intern position will entail assisting the director and staff of the Export Center with day-to-day operations and special projects.

Duties will include: answering phones; disseminating information to clients; helping clients with basic questions; performing data entry; helping to coordinate Partners for Trade export seminars; assisting in the
development of Export Center publications, which may include calling companies, data entry and word processing; maintaining and updating the client database, which may include calling companies, data entry and disseminating information to companies; conducting international market research for clients when needed using online databases and the Internet; and other administrative duties as needed.

Qualifications / Skills Required: The position requires the following qualifications/skills: strong administrative and computer skills, including word processing and data entry; strong written and verbal communication skills in English; a high level of initiative; and education/background in international business preferred.

If interested in applying for the volunteer internship position, please submit cover letter and resume to Michael P. Sullivan at the Massachusetts Export Center

The Case of the Bad Internship

There are a number of ways you can learn of internships:

1. My emails. I send out internship announcements via email to all CCB juniors and seniors.

2. This blog (which is really a history of the emails).

3. MonsterTrak (which is maintained by CRC with most of the postings coming in directly to CRC).

4. Other online services such as Monster.com, Internships.com, Google, Projo, Yahoo, etc.5. Word of mouth - students, parents, advisors, professors, etc.

6. Students send out resumes and cover letters on their own.

One of our UMD students recently learned of an internship opportunity on Monstertrak.com. Monstertrak is a service our UMD Career Resource Center uses to publicize internship opportunities and entry level job openings to UMD students.

The student went to his first interview and the employer made the opportunity sound great. He was told that he would need to go on an 8 hour job and shadow and that they would be taking him out to lunch. When the student started the internship they left in his trainer's car, and he was taken to McDonald's for lunch. From there they went over the some of the job's different aspects, and the pay (which is all based on commission) but didn't go over specifically what the intern would be doing. Here is a quote from the student:

“Finally, we get to where we we're supposed to go and it was a neighborhood, and he told me we would be doing door to door sales for the next 7 hours of my life. I was so upset if I knew it was door to door sales. I would have never went, their posting on Monster said nothing about it nor did their website. I just wanted to let you know just in case other people try to sign up for it not knowing what it was.”

Lesson: Please be careful. Learn as much as you can before committing yourself to an internship. Some employers use internships as a way to get low cost labor. You need to make sure that the work is challenging and that you will learn. Otherwise its a waste of your time.

When we receive requests for interns, we do some research and homework to help assure that the experience is solid. But also do your homework. Visit the company's web site. Write a list of questions. If it is marketing related, ask if you will be "selling" and how that will work. Many people confuse marketing with selling and unless you are looking for a career in sales, stay away from "marketing internships" that force you to do the selling. Some internships, such as those with financial services firms, do require some selling functions. But even in those situations, most of your work should be supporting the sales rep, not making cold calls.

Accounting Internship: Fall 2007

ATTENTION ACCOUNTING MAJORS

A local CPA firm is looking for an accounting major (junior as of F2007) to
work 10-15 hours per week in the Fall 07. We have placed students in this
company before and have had very positive feedback. Should be a good
student (GPA at least 3.0) and should have an interest in public
accounting. This experience could qualify for 3 credits for a business
elective as long as all UMD requirements are met - including enrolling and
successful completion of ACT 399 Accounting Internship. Interested
candidates should send resume and brief email explaining why you are
interested in this opportunity to Mike Griffin, Assistant Dean
(mgriffin@umassd.edu)

Thanks.
