The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra brings classical music, new music, and a range of music-education programs to more than 50,000 of the Massachusetts' South Coast community every year. In an area where
economic hardship makes everyday life difficult for struggling individuals and families, the NBSO stands as an essential cultural resource for the entire region -- and one that is regarded with great pride.
The mission of the NBSO is to make music available to men, women, and children in the South Coast Region. We offer live orchestra concerts in downtown New Bedford, free concerts for children during
the month of March, Master Classes in the high schools and colleges for student musicians, and a sensational Music in the Morning program for elementary school children in their classrooms every morning of
the school year. In short, as the foremost cultural institution in the area, we are the sound of music for our region. Our current offerings are:
Live Music Concerts: 5 classical concerts per season at the historic Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Purchase Street in New Bedford; 2 pops concerts per year in other venues;
Music in the Morning: music every morning for 11,000 children in 31 schools (9 districts) of the South Coast area;
Young People's Concerts: 4 (increasing to 6) live classical music concerts at the Zeiterion for 5,000 young people each year;
NBSO Lectures and Master classes: free lectures preceding NBSO concerts and master classes provided by NBSO distinguished soloists in varying regional high schools and colleges;
Civic and Special Events: NBSO members play for fund-raisers and other events where music helps to celebrate a special occasion.
