FDIC: 3 Year Internship

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

Have you ever considered a career with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)? The FDIC is an independent agency of the federal government that regulates about 5,300 banks in the United States. The FDIC employs more than 5,000 in its headquarters in Washington, DC, regional offices in Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City and San Francisco, and field offices throughout the country. This is a big agency with many opportunities.

The FDIC hires lots of business graduates and provides top notch training. I worked for a similar agency (FSIC – regulator for the savings and loan industry) as a bank examiner and attended FDIC training and seminars. Our business school has had graduates go on to work for the FDIC. One UMD alum has been with them for more than 15 years and has had a wonderful career.

The local recruiter for the FDIC is Kristin Keefe. She works out of Foxborough, Massachusetts. She tells me that the FDIC offers opportunities all over the US (although their headquarters are in Washington DC. The FDCI runs a program called the Corporate Employee Program. It is a 3 year, full-time paid internship that can lead to a permanent appointment. You must be a graduating senior to be considered for one of these internships. As an intern you participate in the assessment of financial institutions to determine:

the existence of safe and sound practices; violations of law and
regulation
the adequacy of internal controls
the general character of management
compliance with consumer protection, fair lending and civil rights
laws and regulations and the Community Reinvestment Act

You will also review, monitor and provide analysis of information pertaining to resolutions, settlements, pro-forma preparation, and deposit insurance claims.

This position involves travel and participation in professional development – both formal and on-the-job assignments in the field and at the headquarters.

Kristin Keefe would be happy to discuss career opportunities with any interested student. Majors in accounting, finance, marketing, and management. Here is her contact information:
