Summer Internship at Scottrade

Here is a link that will be of interest to CCB majors interested in a career in Finance at a major stock, bond, and investment company - Scottrade.  This would make for a great summer internship and I would certainly approve it for credit and entry into the online summer internship course.  This one is in Providence but you could search Indeed.com for the same internship in other cities.  I know they are recruiting at other locations.

Summer and Fall Marketing and Sales (Paid) Internships at Local Yachting Company

This is an outstanding opportunity for a hard working, smart, marketing student.  I recently visited with the owner of this company and was very impressed with their operation and their plans to bring on an intern.  This is full-time (40 hours) paid during the summer and about 10 hours per week in the fall.  The student will work at the place of business in South Dartmouth (beautiful spot) and will be supervised by porfessions in the field.  This is a successful local marine related business.

SALES AND MARKETING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Cape Yachts: CapeYachts.com

Established in 1986, Cape Yachts has been a full service Beneteau Yacht Dealership since 1989 servicing the Northeast of the United States. The company is owned by Dave Nolan.

South Wharf (SouthWharf.com)

Acquired by Dave Nolan in 2006, South Wharf has played an important role in the local marine community from the construction of whaling ships to the servicing of private yachts. The tradition of fine reliable service continues in the maintenance and repair of today’s modern sophisticated yachts.

To support the activities of its South Dartmouth (MA) yard and offices, we are looking for two interns for the following missions, starting summer 2013:

Job Activities
Job would entail assisting with marketing and sales, in house, online, ad campaigns, email campaigns, open houses, boat shows, customer interactions including reception, greeting, etc., special projects including assisting with development of new web site (with Yachtworld), company brochure, custom video project for individual brokerage listings. Students will also be involved with social network marketing activities.

We are looking for a quick thinking, motivated individual who is able to work independently with minimal guidance. Affinity and/or knowledge of the marine industry a definite plus.

Internship News and the Summer 2013 Internship for Credit

Hi CCB majors:

Hope finals are going well and I am sorry to bother you during such a busy time. I want you to know that I am continuing to get requests into the internship blog (http://www.businessinternships.blogspot.com/) for summer interns.

Also, I am still seeing new summer internship positions posted on independent portals such www.indeed.com. So if you are still in the hunt for a summer internship, please stay at it, submit your resumes to these opportunities, and prepare yourself by learning as much as you can about potential internship providers. many students tell me that they have been unsuccessful in landing a good opportunity. I hear it all the time .... "I have sent in my resume, applied for many positions, etc. etc. and .... no offers."

Here is my basic advice - you can't lose heart and give up. Keep applying and keep making acquaintances and friendships with people who can help you out. Apply for everything, take as many interviews as possible, and tell everyone you know that you are looking for opportunities. They will come. We had over 80 students do internships this past semester alone! So students with no more smarts than you are finding internships and good part-time jobs. The opportunities are out there but it does become a numbers game and a challenge to network like crazy.  Learn the ways of uncovering opportunities.  You have to develop into a good sales and marketing professional and the product is .... YOU!

I want to highlight a few things that are recent to the blog. Jane Staples, the UMD Internship Director, has asked me to encourage students to examine the 2013 SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE IN HIGH TECH, CLEAN ENERGY & LIFE SCIENCES . Go to http://businessinternships.blogspot.com/2013/05/2013-summer-internship-opportunities.html and read about this possibility. If you have questions, get in touch with Jane Staples. You have to be very proactive - almost "pushy" with the internship and job hunt. Follow-up, follow-up, and follow-up. Call and email. Say: "I am following up on a recent internship opening with your company. I sent in my resume and was wondering if you have any questions as I am very interested in this opportunity." Please don't hesitate to follow-up.

There is an operations internship that just came to my attention at a Mansfield, MA company called LagasseSweet (http://www.lagassesweet.com/static/LS/LS/). This is a very large company and a very interesting one. It's like the largest company that I have never heard of and I do believe that this is an hidden gem of an opportunity for the right student. Management very much wants a UMD student to come learn the business, help with lean production, and earn some money at the same time. If you are a student interested in operations, check out the posting at: http://businessinternships.blogspot.com/2013/05/summer-operations-internship-paid.html

Some of our staff have been working on some student job openings under a grant - Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant. The postings for that can be found on the blog at: http://businessinternships.blogspot.com/2013/05/marketing-assistant-could-be-summer.html

I have also received some summer internship postings from the state of Massachusetts and posted those on the blog. You can look at the links in the recent archives and find these. There are some that are marketing related, some that are general office internships and I believe a few accounting and finance. I am also working on an interesting marketing and sales internship with a local boat yard/ yacht club and another potential operations management internship.

There is also an MIS internship with a local company (Plymouth, MA that has gone unfilled (http://businessinternships.blogspot.com/2013/03/technical-support-specialist-summer.html) and a local entrepreneur who is starting up a social network marketing firm and would like to bring on a bright/tech savvy marketing intern - check it out via this link ..... (http://businessinternships.blogspot.com/2013/05/local-social-marketing-internship.html).

If you come upon an opportunity and want to run it by me for internship approval, I will need some basic information to get started:

Description of the company including the mission, location, sales and market coverage. Please include your web URL (if you have it):

Primary duties and responsibilities:

What will the student learn from this experience (list 4 or 5 learning objectives)?

Job Title:

Academic preparation of the student required (graduate, senior, junior, courses taken, GPA, etc.):

Skills required:

Hours of work:

Start and end dates:

Primary supervisor and contact information:

More information on the CCB internship program can be found at:

http://www.umassd.edu/charlton/internship/

Finally, the summer internship course is set to go live via myCourses on June 10th. There is still time to land a summer internship and get enrolled into that course. That is the only way to earn summer internship credit (3 credits for a business elective). The course carries the normal tuition and fees for a UMD summer course. You do need my approval to enroll. The process requires that I review your request to enroll in the course, grant approval via an email which you can use to gain entry into the course. If you have my approval and are having difficulty enrolling, please contact Maria Cordeiro mcordeiro@umassd.edu. Maria will be able to enroll you in the course upon seeing evidence of my approval (my email). Here is Maria's contact information:
